PORT CHALMERS NEWS
NEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The new Presbyterian Church, which has just been built at Sawyers’ Bay, will be officially opened this evening. The Rev. J. G, Dunn, of the Port Chalmers Church, and members of the Dunedin Presbytery will be present. REPLACING WATER MAINS The water supply to the borough is ndw receiving attention, and improvements are being carried out in some parts of the town. Yesterday a start was made to re-lay the mains in Beach street from the band rotunda to the docks. The present 5-inch main is in a very bad condition, and after the pipes have been raised they will be replaced. About 20 unemployed are engaged on the excavation work. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A congregational social was held in the old Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church on Monday evening. The social side of the evening was in the hands of Mrs Smillie and Carey Bay friends who provided an excellent programme and supper. The Rev. J. G. Dunn brought forward a recommendation of the Deacons’ Court that as this was the jubilee year of the present church, the time was opportune for a special thanks offering for reducing the debt on the church. The suggestion was warmly supported by Mr Chisholm (session clerk), Mr John Tait (senior elder), and Dr Edgar, and on being put to the gathering was unanimously agreed to. It was decided that Sunday, October 29, be set aside as a special offering day.
