FIXTURES September 23.—Otago v. South Canterbury, at Timaru. September 30.—Otago v. Southland, at Dunedin. JUNIOR. September 23. —Otago v. South Canterbury, at Timaru. September 30. —Otago v. Southland, at Dunedin. LAST SATURDAY’S GAMES Otago received very little opposition from North Otago at the Oval on Saturday, due in considerable measure no doubt to the fact that the visitors were with-; out the services of their captain, B. Hore, who would probably have done a great deal to keep the team together had he been there. The North Otago men were rushed right from the start, and had little opportunity to carry out anything in the way of combined movements, but when they found an opening they were usually unable to take advantage of it on account of strong opposition offered by the Otago defence. Nevertheless, they were triers to the end, as was shown by their goal scored not long before the final whistle. The players from Oamaru still have a lot to learn, but a few of such matches will be good experience for them,, and they may be expected to make an improved showing in the future. The Otago men played very well as a team, but it would be difficult to judge them in such a one-sided game, for which reason the remaining matches on the representative list will be looked forward to with interest. The team to play South Canterbury at Timaru next Saturday is a considerably altered one, and on paper not such a strong one, but it is pleasing to see that two men from the North Otago team have been included. It is to be expected that they will have a better opportunity to show their ability than they had last Saturday. . Those who visited „ the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon to see the match between the Otago B team and the team from H.M.A.S. Australia were not disappointed, except perhaps in the display of Otago, for the visitors gave a bright exhibition, and played clever hockey. They were some time in settling down, with the result that Otago scored the first two goals, but after that they were rarely at a loss, and had the local players somewhat disconcerted by' their clever stickwork and their tactics of changing the play quickly from one wing to the other, to which factors they owed their win. With all that, the . Otago team should have held them. Their play was of the most mediocre type, and certainly not up to representative standard. With this issue of the Daily Times the hockey column is concluded for the season, and “ Centreffialf ” wishes to thank those contributors who have so readily supplied material of interest, during the past few months.
