THE ROOSEVELT PLAN
HOPES OF AMERICA COMMENT BY MR FORBES (Pek United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 19. “ Plans for recovery of trade and employment were only in their initiation stages when we arrived in New York,” stated the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) in the course of an address at a civic reception to-night. It was evident that great hopes were being raised in anticipation of the beneficial effects on business and employment that the operation of the National Recovery Act would bring about. The opinion generally expressed was that the President had the belief that bis plan would be a way out of their troubles. “He has appealed to us,” said Mr Forbes, “to back the scheme, and we shall respond to his appeal. There were very few who spoke confidently of its success. The people of the United States during the past two years have had a very bad time and a spirit of hopelessness was growing among them. It would be idle after a few days spent through the country for one to pass judgment on a national policy depending on nation-wide support for its successful working. I can say this, however, that its success or failure matters a great deal to the world, and all our prayers should be for its success. One might be critical of some details of the programme, but the spectacle of a great nation trying to fight its way up from the depths of depression arouses one’s sympathy and the fervent hope that they may be successful.
