AUSTRIAN CHANCELLOR
POSITION WEAKENED - CHALLENGES FROM GROUPS. VIENNA, September 18. The position- of Dr Dolfuss has weakened as the result of yesterday s open challenges from the powerful groups led by Prince Starhemberg and Herr Winkler (vice-chancellor), which have nothing in common except opposition to the Nazis and the Socialists, but which demand that the Chancellor incorporate their creeds in the new Constitution. Meanwhile the Austrian Nazis are jubilantly watching the disputes. Prince Starhemberg emphasised that Dr Dolfuss will receive Heimwebr—that is, Fascist—support only if he establishes a Fascist State on Italian lines, and says that it is essential to clean out the Cabinet. Herr Winkler, while expressing loyalty to Dr Dolfuss, declines to merge his own organisation in the Chancellor’s “ Fatherland front.”' A FURTHER COMPLICATION. VIENNA, September 18. The riddle of party balances is complicated by the Socialists and trade union leaders’ decision to support Dr Dolfuss against any form of Fascism, either Brown Shirt or Heimwehr.
