KING EDWARD TECHNICAL COLLEGE

MEETING OF MANAGERS The monthly meeting of the King Edward Technical College managers was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs T. bcott (chairman), J. J. Marlow, F. L. Lawrence, W. G. Baird, H. Johnson, B. F. Duthie, C. J. Hayward, L. Sanderson, W W. Batche or. H. H. Leary, J. Sheppard, J.E. Wheeler, Mrs Gumming and Mrs Herbert. Prior to commencing the business or the meeting the chairman extended a wel-come-to Mr H. Johnson, and congratulated him on his election to the board as the representative of the School committees. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The principal. Mr W. G. Aldridge, submitted the following report:— Technical High School and evening classes reopened on Monday, September 11 Miss C. Neale has returned to full duty. In sport the senior boys Rugby team won the banner in its grade for the first time in the history of the school. The school Association teams have been declared winners in both the hourtli and Sixth Junior Divisions. The school is changing over to the summer sport m a week or two and at the moment mterform competitions are being held. They will be followed by preliminaries for the annual athletic sports, which, it is hoped, will take place on October 26. h roni February to the end of June 60 pupils left the school, and of this number only 34 were known to have obtained work locally. During July and August 29 boys and 26 girls left, and of these 24 boys and 13 girls are known to have obtained employment away from home. Of tne whole of the latter 37 so employed, 26 enrolled in evening classes. The figures confirm our usual experience; that is to s.ay, chances of employment are much better in the latter half of the year, and it is the stimulus of having got a promising job that sends .a student into the evening classes. The City Corporation has completed its delivery of spoil from the York place sections. I wish to ask for authority to' spread over this spoil other material during consolidation to be mixed with the top inch of filling. It seems that a suitable material can be obtained, under reasonable conditions, from the Kaikorai Tramway Company, and I should like authority to negotiate with them for supply.. The upper lawn tennis courts are still in the hands of the asphalter and will probably be unfit for play for another fortnight, as the Works Committee wish to assure themselves that they are making a thorough job. The drains have all been cleared and reset, so that they cannot block again, and unusual care is being taken to adjust levels over the whole area. The report was adopted. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. The following committees were appointed;— ~ _ . Finance Committee.—Messrs Duthie (convener), Hayward, Leary, Johnson. Works Committee—Messrs Baird (convener), Batchelor, Clark, Lawrence, Wheeler. Appointments and Classes Committee. — Messrs Marlow (convener), Sheppard, Sanderson, Todd, Mesdames Gumming, and Herbert. The chairman is ex-officio a member of all committees. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from the secretary of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce intimating that that body had decided to make a grant of £3 3s towards the funds of the board. —It was decided to thank the chamber for its donation.

FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1059 8s 7d were passed for payment.
