DUNEDIN FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs J. Wilson (chairman), W. A. Scott, F. T. Anderson, F. Wilkinson, and H. A. B. Brabant. In his report, Superintendent J. J. Salmon stated that the City Brigade had attended 40 calls during the past month. The calls were catalogued as follows Fires, 7; chimney fires, 23; rubbish and bush, 3; false alarms, 7 (malicious 1, justifiable 1, automatic 1, and accidental 4), In connection with the actual fires the superintendent reported that a greenhouse in the Botanic Gardens had been badly damaged, and a shop and dwelling in Albany street was slightly damaged by fire and the stock suffered from smoke. The remaining five fires were of a minor nature. The chimney fires attended from the central station numbered 9, from South Dunedin station 7, from Rolsyn 4, and Green Island 3. The faulty condition of three chimneys was reported to the parties concerned. The property affected by fire comprised: Greenhouse, 1; barrel of tar, 1; motor vehicles, 2; pavilion, 1; shop and dwelling, 2. The causes of fires were: Overheating 2, backfire 1, short circuit 1, sparks 2, unknown 1. All the plant was in its usual good order. The staff had been engaged in its ordinary work of inspection and testing of alarms and fire plugs. New indicating signs had been erected, and the alarm boxes and poles were being painted. The water pressure recorded at the various stations was: Central; 9 a.m., 951 b; 9 p.m., 1401 b. South Dunedin: 9 a.m., 801 b; 9 p.m., 1201 b. Roslyn: 9 a.m., 951 b; 9 p.m., 1351 b. The St. John Ambulance travelled 754 miles and transported 114 patients during the month.—The report was adopted. The General Committee reported that accounts amounting to £2120 15s Id had been passed for payment.
