CRICKET

GRANGE CLUB The annual meeting of the Grange Cricket Club was held last night in tins North Ground pavilion. The president (Mr R. M’Leau) was chairman, and there was a large attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman congratulated the members on their performances last season. It was true no championships had been won, but a very fine spirit had been shown, and there was an improvement in the play. This was proved by the number of centuries scored by members of the club in Plunkct Shield matches. He regretted very much that the senior team had lost the fielding trophy. It was hoped, however, that the team would recapture the trophy next season. In order t , encourage members in fielding, he intended to present a trophy to the player who had the most catches to his credit at the end of the season. It was very pleasing to see such a fine average made by members and so many centuries made by players in most of the ■ grades last season. It was to be regretted that the club was losing the North Ground. This was a serious matter for the club, as the North Ground was the home of Dunedin cricket, the game having been played there is far back as the sixties. It was t indeed a great pity that the club had been driven away because the City Council would not put the ground in order! The committee would have to take this matter in hand and make every effort to i itain the ground. In regard to finance, it was pleasing to know that the club had a small credit balance. The motion was seconded by Mr 0. Chadwick, who also congratulated the members on the performances put up 'last year. The B Grade members had worked very hard. The secretary reported that he had written to the acting superintendent of reserves in connection with the ground, and that Mr Galland had been appointed to interview him. Mr Galland said that he had made several attempts to interview the acting superintendent of reserves, but up to the present had not been successful in his mission. The North Ground had been available for topdressing during the last two weeks, but nothing had yet been done. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, Bishop Richards; president, Mr R. M'Lean; vice-presidents—Messrs O. E. Briggs, A. Restieaux, J. Russell, G. A. Nelson, A. C. Hanlon, K.C., R. G. Hudson, A. Robinson, J. Walker, J. Young, M. Higgins, S. Larkins, W. Henderson, I. Curtis, W. M. Beal, 0. Stevens, T. H. Elmos, W. H. Naylor, J. Brown, and E. A. Hamel; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. A. Rowland; assistant secretary and treasurer, Mr 0. Dey; club captain, Mr C. S. Chadwick; deputy captain, Mr 0. Dey; General Committee—Messrs A. Galland, G. Burgess, J. Dey, W. Shepherd, and E. Williams; selectors —Messrs A. Galland, E. S. Chadwick, and O. Dey; delegates to Otago Cricket Association--Messrs 0. Stevens, 0. Dey, and W. M. Beal; delegate to the Boys’ Cricket Association, Mr C. Bird; delegate to the Otago Amateur Athletic Club’s Protection Association, Mr A. Restieaux; auditor, Mr G. A. Nelson. Mr G. A. Nelson stressed the necessity for the Grange Club to secure direct representation on the Otago Cricket Association. He took strong exception to the manner in which the club’s delegate was treated by the association last year. He knew that everything possible was done to prevent the Grange Club securing representation on the association. This sort of treatment would not he tolerated. Mr W. M. Beal said he was present at an association meeting last year when the Grange Club’s delegate was absolutely boycotted. He could state with all truth that everything possible was done to prevent the club’s delegate from obtaining a representative footing on the Cricket Association. The. whole procedure was so glaring that he came away from the meeting with a feeling of disgust. It was decided that the season be officially opened on Saturday, October 7. Several trophies were offered for competition next season. J. A.. Breen was granted a transfer to the Lawrence Club. Eight new members were elected. It was decided to offer free membership to two boys each from the Albany Street, George Street, Normal,, and Maori Hill Schools. The trophies won by members last season were presented by the president as follows: —First Grade batting, C. Elmes (Mr R. M'Lean’s bat); First Grade bowling, 6. Lcmin (Mr T. H. Elmes’s trophy) ; Second Grade A batting, W. Shepherd (Sports Depot bat); Second Grade A bowling, L. Mercer (Mr J. Walker’s trophy) ; Second Grade B batting, M. Anderson (Mr W. Stiglich’s trophy); Second Grade B bowling, G. Burgess (Mr A. Rcstieaux’s trophy); Third Grade A batting, M. Milburn, (Mr I. Curtis’s trophy); Third Grade A bowling, G. Knowles (Mr W. M.
