NO CAUSE FOR APPREHENSION ADDITIONAL TAXATION IMPROBABLE. (Fbom Oob Special Reporter.) WELLINGTON, September 19. “The revenue is holding up very well, and with the recent improvement in prices the result of this year’s budgeting should be better than was originally anticipated,” said the Minister of Finance (Mr J. G. Coates) in an interview this evening. Mr Coates expects to present bis Budget on a day yet to be. fixed next month. It is not expected that the financial statement will contain many unpleasant surprises for the taxpayers. Mr Coates is not yet prepared to say there will he no new taxation, but he indicated that on present prospects there was no necessity for the community to have any apprehensions on that score. The general revision of the tariff will not take place until March. The Tariff Commission’s report is not due until the end of January, and Mr Coates expects that it will take quite a month after that for Cabinet to study the recommendations and reach decisions, while a further . fortnight will be necessary to draft appropriate legislation. _ However, Parliament will be asked within, the next few weeks' to consider the ratification of the trade treaty made between New Zealand and Australia early this year. The terms of this agreement have not yet been divulged: It has bedn arranged that, the announcement and appropriate legislation will appear simultaneously in both Parliaments, Mr Coates is in communication with the Federal Government, with a view to arranging a suitable date, and his tentative suggestion is the first week in October.
