PORT CHALMERS NEWS
IDLE WATERFRONT With the departure of the cruiser Australia on Monday, there is little activity on the Port Chalmers waterfront. All the berths at the wharves, with the exception of one, are vacant, and the waterside workers, in consequence, are experiencing a lean time. There has been no shipping work offering since the Ruahine sailed towards the end of last week. The Union Company’s old cargo steamer Kahika, which has occupied a berth on the north side of the George street wharf, is to be broken up, but ‘his work has not yet been commenced. There should be more activity on the waterfront next week, as the liner lonie is expected about Tuesday to discharge general cargo from London and load products for England. The steamer Rhymney, with phosphates from the Seychelles Islands, should reach Port Chalmers towards the end of next week. This vessel, which was delayed at Durban owing to engine trouble, will discharge about half of her cargo here, and a fairly large number of men will be employed at the ship for several days. Very few waterside workers are engaged on relief work this week. LAWN TENNIS CLUB The official opening of the Port Chalmers Lawn Tennis Club’s season was held on Saturday afternoon under excellent conditions. The president (Dr K. Edgar), in declaring the season open, congratulated the club on its progress during the year and expressed the hope that the reclamation of Mussel Bay would progress satisfactorily, it would not be long before one or two additional courts would be laid down for play. Messrs R. S. Jack and T. Begg, members of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association’s executive, congratulated the club in winning the shield last season and hoped that it would retain the trophy this year. Mr K. G. Roy, vice-president of the club, and Mr G. F. Mirams and Mr L. F. Smith also congratulated the club. During the afternoon a yankee tournament was held, several men from the H.M.A.S. Australia taking part. Miss Middleton and Mr L. Pike were the winners.
A social function to which players and officers from the Australia were invited proved a success. The prizes won in the afternoon were presented in the evening.
