THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP HOPE DEFEATS JACKSON. MELBOURNE, September 15. (Received Sept. 15, at 10.30 p.m.) The amateur golf championship of Australia was won by W. L. Hope, of Victoria, who in the final defeated A. W. Jackson, of Victoria, 6 and 5 over 36 holes. It was Hope’s first appearance for the Australian title. He previously twice represented Great Britain against the United' States in the Walker Cup and played five times for Scotland against England. He was also the first amateur in the British open championship of 1932. Jackson played 1 his usual consistent game, but Hope was brilliant on the greens and controlled the ball splendidly in the high wind. Sloan Morpeth was eliminated on the thirty-seventh green in the quarter-finals by Jackson. THE PROFESSIONAL TITLE, WON BY S. RICHARDSON. MELBOURNE, September 15. (Received Sept. 15, at 10.30 p.m.) The final of the professional championship of Australia was played over 36 holes at the Royal Melbourne links and was won by Sam Richardson, of New South Wales, who defeated A. Spence, of Victoria, 9 and 7. Richardson is at present the best and most orthodox shot maker in Australia. Spence made a big bid to win the double for tlie Yarrayarra Golf Club, Hope, who is a member, having accomplished the first leg. Richardson’s regularity and consistency nonplussed Spence and the former gradually forged ahead with perfect shots in gusty weather to a clear cut victory.
