AUTHORITY TO” RAISE LOAN COMMITTEE’S ACTION EXPLAINED The reasons actuating the Works Committee in recommending to the Dunedin Drainage Board that authority should be sought to raise a furl her £IOO,OOO of the £250,000 loan were explained by the chairman of the Works Committee (Mr J. J. Marlow) at the monthly meeting of the board last night. Mr Marlow said that briefly the position was that the board had statutory authority to borrow £250,000 for drainage works. At a meeting of the board some time ago authority was granted to apply for £46,000 for the Wilkie road sower, but on going into the matter care fully the committee thought it better to have a schedule of works costing £IOO,OOO drawn up so that the undertakings could be proceeded with as required. The following schedule had been drawn up:— Estimated Storm Water Sewers — Cost. Wilkie road storm water conduit (King Edward street to Glen road) £46,000 South road storm water conduit (Glen road to Playfair street) 10,606 Playfair street storm water conduit (South road to Corstorphine Creek) .. 3,000 (Part of Wilkie road storm water scheme relieving Forbury aqueduct.) ‘ South Dunedin storm water reticulation (on account) 7,000 Mud tanks in board’s area .. 2,000 Offices and stores, Anderson’s Bay road yard 2,500 Foul Sewers — St. David street six-inch foul sewer, Cumberland street to George street. (At present the foul sewage goes into the storm water sewer and discharges into the Leith during wet weather.) .. 500 Sidey street six-inch foul sewer 1,130 Aberdeen road six-inch foul sewer 1,040 Ravenswood road six-inch foul sewer extension .. 485 Cliffs road six-inch foul sewer extension 400 Every street and Hamilton road six-inch foul sewer .. 1,100 Balmacewen road six-inch foul sewer extension .. 1,390 Malvern street nine-inch foul sewer extension .. .. 2,000 Pine Hill road six-inch foul sewer extension to Education Board’s subdivision .. 1,850 Signal Hill road six-inch foul sewer extension •. . • 385 Unforeseen works .. • • 9,554 Total • • £IOO,OOO If the recommendation were approved, Mr Marlow added, the work at Wilkie road would be commenced, but none of the other works would be proceeded with until the board sanctioned them. The recommendation was approved, and a formal resolution was carried indicating that it will be necessary to strike a rate of IJd in the £1 as security for the loin.
