IMPORTERS AND SHIPPERS
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the executive of the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association was held on Tuesday evening. .There were present Mr 11. C. Campbell (chairman), and Messrs S. F. Aburn, A. De Beer, J. L. Gardiner, C. V. Smith, and J. C. 11. Somerville. Correspondence between the association and the New Zealand Shipping Company requesting that if possible the Ruahine bo berthed at Dunedin wharf was read.— This was eventually found to be impossible owing to the nature of the vessel, and her draft on arrival. The New Zealand Importers’ Federation, Wellington, advised that the proposed date for the joint conference between representatives of various associations representing both primary and secondary industries, convened in the first place by the Associated Chambers of Commerce, had been found unsuitable to some participants, and had therefore been postponed in the meantime. —Received. In regard to Japanese trade, an interesting statement, as issued by the Sydney branch of the Yokohama Specie Bank, regarding the causes that had led to the very marked decline in the value of the yen was submitted. One new member was accepted. The secretary reported that the last outstanding claim, dealt with by the association had been satisfactorily adjusted. The meeting close with an interesting discussion of legislation passed in South Africa dealing with recent developments of competitive trading, which proved of no little interest in view of similar conditions obtaining of late in the Dominion.
