JAPAN’S FINANCES
READJUSTMENT POSTPONED NATIONAL DEFENCE FIRST (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) TOKTO, September 12, (Received Sept. 12, at 11.15 p.m.) Mr Takahashi, in a statement to the press, said that the requirements of national defence must have priority in the forthcoming Budget, thereby postponing plans for financial readjustment. This is clearly the result of General Araki’s interview. Extraordinary expenditure on the army and navy is estimated at £800,000,000 and an enormous Budget deficit is inevitable. A long interview between General Araki (Minister of War) and Mr Takahashi (Minister of Finance) is evoking the greatest interest among the vernacular press. In addition to their obvious purpose to secure inclusion in the Budget of enormous military requirements, their plans are attributed to include the abolition of political party government, uniting the country under the slogan of national defence, and increasing the dominating influence of the army.
