LADIES’ LOCKEY TEAM
SUCCESS AT TOURNAMENT AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME. An enthusiastic welcome was accorded the members of the victorious Otago ladies’ hockey team when they arrived in Dunedin from Dannevirke by the express yesterday afternoon. They were later given a civic reception in the Town Hall Council Chamber, where there was a large assembly of hockey followers and representatives of other sports. The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) presided. The Mayor said he had very great
pleasure bn behalf of the city in welcoming home the members of the team, who were bringing with them the trophies, which, he understood, they were to hold for six months of the coming year. They had put up an outstanding performance; in fact, it was one that had never been equalled—that a team should go right through a Dominion tournament without having a goal scored against it. The public of Dunedin and Otago had followed their achievements with the greatest interest, and these would be treasured in the annals of sport. The president of the Otago Ladies’ Hockey Association (Mrs R. Hudson) said she was very proud of the team’s performance, and she was sure that the whole of New Zealand was proud of it. The Otago teams had always been looked up to for their conduct, and she was satisfied that in the present case the
team had behaved itself worthily. Mrs Hudson made appreciative reference to the efficient and understanding manner in which the manager and coach of the team (Mr P. Farrell) had carried out his duties, and also, paid a tribute to Miss Ada Mackie (captain), who, she was sure, was recognised as the finest lady hockey player in New Zealand. Mrs Nelson also referred to the excellent play of the Otago goal-keeper, Miss H. Johnstone. Congratulations were offered to the members of the team by Messrs J. W. Munro, M.P., and F. Jones, M.P., and by representatives of various sports bodies. Replying on behalf of the team Mr Farrell said the week in Dannevirke had certainly not been a holiday for the girls in the team. They had been in strict
training, and so high a reputation had they earned after the first few games that their play had been followed with a great deal more interest than that of the other teams. Mr Farrell concluded by paying a tribute to the sole selector of the Otago team (Mr David Miller), to whom, he said, a great deal of the team’s success was due. Cheers were then given for the team and for Miss Johnstone, the goalie, after which the gathering broke up. WELCOME AT MILTON. It has been decided that all the members of the Otago ladies’ hockey team will go to Milton this evening to attend the social and welcome which has been arranged in honour of the South Otago members. The “K ” Cup will also be taken for exhibition purposes.
