A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR.
“QUEER RATHER THAN DANGEROUS.”
NEW YORK, August 4, (Received August 6, at 7 p.m.)
A few minutes after noon to-day the Wall street financial district was thrown into the utmost confusion as gas from ingeniously placed bombs Hooded the central trading lobby of the Stock Exchange, driving some 2000 brokers, clerks, and attendants into nearby streets. The police are undecided if the perpetrators are political radicals, cranks or practical jokers. Practically all the occupants suii'ered from irritated throats, violent coughing, and inflamed eyes. It is reported that some bombs were placed in the automatic ventilating system, apparently the work of someone familiar with the layout of the building. The police are reserved. They have placed a cordon round the area and started an immediate investigation. They have discovered the identity of the manufacturers and the distributors of the bombs and early arrests are hoped for. There will be no more trading until Monday. Late to-night the Boston police raided the headquarters of the “ Commoners and International Party,” a practically unknown political organisation, and arrested four suspects. According to information gathered by the police the actual bomber was Eugene Daniells, jun., aged 28, the party’s head, who is said to have planned several “ spectacular stunts” to get publicity to further his political ambitions. His associates are said to have admitted that Daniells planned sending similar bombs to President Roosevelt, Mr Hoover, and other leading presidential candidates for the purpose of getting publicity. Mr Daniells was himself a presidential candidate, getting some 380 “ write in ” votes from friends in the vicinity of Boston.
The fact that most of the party members are young college graduates of reputable families has caused the police to characterise the activities as queer, rather than dangerous.
