RUGBY FOOTBALL

CANTERBURY REPRESENTATIVES DEFEATED BY WELLINGTON. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 5. The touring Canterbury Rugby team was defeated by Wellington at Athletic Park to-day by 14 points to 6. followmg heavy rain all the previous day and overnight, the ground was in a greasy condition, but there was no rain during the play except for five minutes after the opening of the second spell. Canterbury was favoured with a strong southerly wind in the first spell, but did not exploit it nearly enough, confining its attack mainly to its forwards, who met more than their match in the Wellington pack. Under the conditions sound back played was almost impossible, though one or two backs on either side ' rose superior to the conditions, notably Mortlock and Dunshea of Canterbury and Killeen and Robins of Wellington. Alter a good beginning Wellington was kept defending for the greater part of the first spell, but once the home players got the weather behind them they were almost continually on attack. It was not a day on which the merits of any team could be accurately judged. Wellington played soundly, both back and forward, and many of the young players in the Canterbury team gave promise of developing good Rugby form, and should mould into a sound side by the time the more important Ranfurly Shield fixtures come up for decision. As was only to be expected under the conditions, several of the points scored were of a lucky variety. Robins opened the scoring for Wellington with a gift try after Hart had failed to connect with a speculator. Hazelhurst evened the score with a penalty goal in which an airline decision for obstruction by M'Lean was somewhat in dispute. Canterbury went into the lead with the best movement of the day when Andrews and Cottrell opened up a fine attack for Dunshea to score, the visitors leading at half time by 6 points to 3. Soon after the opening of the second spell Fuller evened the scores with a penalty goal and Dellabarca put 'Wellington ahead with a try from a very fine solo effort from halfway. Fuller convert.ing. Dellabarca scored again from * loose rush, making the final score: — Wellington 14 points. Canterbury 6 points.
