These are to be distributed to the several unemployment organisations here for allotment to members. PRESBYTERIAN SOCIAL SERVICE During the month five Presbyterian deaconesses have been very busy doing work amongst needy people in and around the town. Along with food, clothing and firewood they have carried a fine spiritual influence wherever they went. A Presbyterian chaplain is visiting in the public and private hospitals in the town and also one at the mental hospital at Seacliff. A nurse is doing everything that can be done to help those requiring the services of a sympathetic nursing sister. A good repre-

sentation of Presbyterian workers is to be seen at most of the relief depots.

During the month the women of the different Presbyterian Churches have made about 350 new garments and remodelled 300 old garments, and all these have gone to relief depots. Besides these 24 parcels and £6O has been spent on garments and goods sent to single men’s camps. In one of the church halls a first class concert is provided every Saturday night for relief workers, and there is generally a full house, and those who attend seem to be most grateful for the entertainment. During the month the Presbyterian Church spent £2O I2s every day on social service work in Dunedin. A long discussion on the question of the return received for the expenditure on relief works took place at a meeting of the county council. One member affirmed that a great deal of work had not returned in labour 25 per cent of the money it cost. With reference to the decision of the Ashburton Relief Workers’ Union against entering camps it was decided that if the men adhered to their decision the council would put all relief work on a piecework basis, and if the camps were not filled the men in future would have to pay the cost of their transport to and from the jobs.
