THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam out faciam." DUNEDIN, MONDAY, AUGUST 4. 1862.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce affords a contrast to the apathy manifested by the Dunedin Chamber. At a recent meeting, the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, resolved—“ That a special meeting of the Chamber be appointed to consider the propriety , of having clauses prepared to be added to the ‘ Imprisonment for Debt Act,, 1862,’ having chiefly in view the enabling' of the principal creditors, as regards amount of debts due, to take the management of insolvent debtors’ affairs in their hands as trustees, and making their acts binding on any such insolvent estate.” We observe that the various agriculural associations in the province of Auckland have resolved to amalgamate themselves into a society under the title of “ The New Zealand Agricultural Society.” The efforts of the society are to be directed to the holding of an annual show at Auckland, and to the encouragement of improvements in stock breeding and farming generally. It has been sugeested also m connection with the society, there should be an agricultural museum established in Auckland, where new comers might at once see the capabilities of the different varieties of soil under different mode's of treatment.

The districts of Tokoniairiro and Waihola are soon, it appears, to have the advantage of the presence of a clergyman of the Church of England. A meeting was held at Tokomairiro, on Wednesday last, at which it was decided to raise the sum ;of £IOO for the purposes of defraying the expenses of the passage of a clergyman) ...

The late frosty _ weather has been followed by a succession of very heavy rains, which have converted the streets of Dunedin into perfect rivers of liquid mud. ...

THE ELECTION FOR BRUCE. The returns from Warepa were received on Saturday morning, blit, as was anticipated, they did not affect the result. There were only two votes polled in that district —one for each candidate. This completes the returns. The totals now stand as follows: Cargill. Baldwin.

Dunedin . . . . . . 55 10 Taieri ■ , 11 32 Tokomairiro . ... 7 11 Warepa ...... 1 1 74 ' 64 Majority for Cargill, 20.
