Miss Mercedes Gleitze, who in 1927 swam from the French coast to Dover, this morning began an attempt to swim the channel from Dover to the French coast. She hoped to reach Franco in _2O hours. After six hours she -was swimming strongly about eight miles east of Dover, but she abandoned the swim after being eight hours in the water owing to a rising wind and rough seas. (Received August 3, at 5.5 p.m.) In the second day's run in the international Alpine motor trials, from Merano to St. Moritz, a notable performance was made by small British cars. In St. Klein Pass a sfibod of 29 miles an hour was imposed on large ears in a climb of 12.} miles with hairpin bends, and 2(> miles an hour on small cars. Of seven cars which completed the climb within the time limit four were British—one Fraser Nash, two Rileys, and one M.G. Midget. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL AUSTRALIAN TEAM’S TOUR.
