OBITUARY

MR A. M. PATERSON The death occurred suddenly at Carisbrook Football Ground on Saturday afternoon of Alexander Marshall Paterson, aged 47 years. • Mr Paterson, who was a well-known footballer several years ago, was a married man, and resided at 731 Cumberland street. He had gone to the match on Saturday with two friends, and during the afternoon he complained of pains in his left shoulder, stating that he had had them for some time. He had thought that rheumatism was the cause of the trouble. He was walking towards a sheltered place on the ground when he suddenly collapsed and died. Dr Perry was called, but he could only pronounce life to be extinct. An inquest will not be necessary. Since ceasing to take an active part in the game, Mr Paterson had been a regular attender at football matches. He was a member of the Zingari-Richmond Club for many years, and was an outstanding forward. He represented Otago continuously from 1908 to 1914, and again in 1920 and 1921, taking part in no fewer than 43 representative matches. He played for the South Island in 1908, 1909, 1910, and 1911, and for New Zealand in the second and third test matches against Harding’s AngloWelsh team. In 1910 he was a member of the New Zealand team which toured Australia. “ Sandy ” Paterson, as he was familiarly known, was a popular figure both on and off the field, and in' his day he was an outstanding forward, his work on the line-outs being especially conspicuous. He is survived by his widow. There is no family.
