AUSTRIA’S FIGHT
INDEPENDENCE MENACED MINISTER AND SOLDIERS. LONDON, June 30. Addressing 1500 recruits at an attestation service in Vienna, General Vaugoin, Minister of Defence, said: “We Austrians are engaged in- a hard fight. If we have not got to defend the Fatherland, nevertheless our independence is seriously menaced. Abominable methods are being used to wipe Austria off the map. “ A struggle awaits you in which yon must fight at the head of your countrymen. Be brave and unyielding. Repulse incitements and treason.” The ceremony, says the Vienna correspondent of The Times, was part of the patriotic campaign being sponsored by the Chancellor, Dr Dolfuss. The recruits were paraded in the Great Square of the Imperial Palace in the presence of 5000 troops wearing pre-war Imperial uniforms. Elaborate precautions were taken to prevent interference, machine-guns and armoured cars being posted in the neighbourhood, and all vehicular and pedestrian traffic was stopped.
