Over a quarter of a million brown trout ova have been placed in the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society’s hatchery (his winter. Eighty thousand of those were •received from Orari River fish, through the South Canterbury Society, and the remaining 170,000 or more have been stripped from fish trapped in the Ashburton River. Last year, stripping was carried out at the lakes, but owing to the great distance of these waters from the hatchery and the difficulties of transport, it lias been found that one-third of the lake fish ova die. Therefore, provided the Ashburton River traps continue to provide requirements as at present, and so long as a flood docs not come down and destroy the traps, the society will not do any stripping at the lakes. It is hoped to place from 400,000 to 4.1)0,000 ova in the hatchery boxes, this season.
