PALMERSTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, June 4. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Palmerston , District High School was held last night, Dr T. T. Thomas occupying the chair. It was decided to have the water meter read quarterly to facilitate accurate calculations of the amount dute. Accounts amounting to £4 7s 3d were passed for payment. A circular was read from the secretary of the School Committees' Association of Otago regarding proposed alterations in the curriculum of district high schools, and requesting the committee's support in opposition to the proposed change. The rector (Mr Arnold) explained the position, and it was decided to support the motion as requested. The rector reported that Miss Murray had been transferred to Waikouaiti, her place under the rationing scheme to be taken by Miss Malthus. The Visiting Committee (Messrs M'Knight and Thomson) reported satisfaction with the interior of the school, but suggested improvements to the lower playground. Dr Thomas and Messrs M'Knight and Shaw were appointed a committee to investigate the matter. Messrs Kerse and Ballingall were appointed the Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. Mr D. Clearwater, secretary of the Young Farmers' Club, appeared before the committee requesting the use of one of the school rooms for meeting purposes. Tt was decided to write to. the Education Board inquiring the committees position in the matter. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. The monthly sitting of the Palmerston Magistrate's Court was held to-day before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. , Judgment by default was given in the following eases:—Waikouaiti County Council v. Sarah Lloyd, claim £7 19sI 9d for rates, with costs (£1 16s 6d); Waikouaiti County Council v. Robert Aprs. claim £4 18s lOd for rates, with costs (£1 0s 6d). i , , , to. A youth was charged that on June 24, 1933, at Waikouaiti. he was found without lawful excuse within a residence. H-3 pleaded guilty, and the case was adjourned for two years, conditional on the defendant being of good behaviour in the meantime. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The monthlv meeting of the Palmerston branch of the Plunket Society was held to-day. Mrs W. J. A. M'Kenny was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. Accounts amounting to £22 17s were passed for payment. Arrangements were made for the catering at the next sale. The nurse reported one death, two cases of whooping cough, and one of chicken pox. Otherwise the health of the children was satisfactory. DRAMATIC CLUB. Mrs C. Melville Newton presided over a further meeting of those interested in the formation of a branch of the British Drama League in Palmerston last night The final details in this connection were satisfactorily arranged, and itwas decided to meet fortnightly as from Julv 18 at the Athenaeum. The following additional office-bearers were elected:— Vice-president Mrs C. F. Smith; stage manager. Mr L. 11. Look; General Committee—Mesdames INewton and Smith. Misses Aitken and Capstick, and Messrs C. M. Olsen, Whittleston, and Chambers.
