OTAGO RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr John Mitchell) occupied the chair. The South Otago Sub-union wrote asking the committee if it had power to rule on an appeal by the Clutha. Valley Club against the Coast Club playing a man who had been suspended by the Alhambra Club, and whose sentence had been endorsed by the Otago Union. The player’s period of suspension was up on June 23, but he had played before it had been completed—lt was decided that the sub-union had power to deal with the matter, and that the committee considered that the Coast Club had no right to play the man, whether it was short of a player or not. „ ~ R. W. Culbert, secretary of the South Otago Rugby Union, forwarded a copy of the evidence at the inquiry into the charge against A. Wybrow (Woodlands) for assaulting R. Jackman (Owaka) at the conclusion of the match between these two teams. Wybrow was suspended for three years.—Mr V, G. Cavanagh said that the sub-union should control its own affairs. He moved that the sentence imposed on Wybrow he confirmed. —Mr J. B. Wootton seconded the motion.—Mr D, C. Jolly said that, in the circumstances, he thought the sentence was too severe. —The chairman said there was no excuse for the offence.—Mr Cavanagh said that it was a premeditated offence. —Mr Jolly said that Wybrow thought he could strike his opponent after the game concluded. Wybrow was playing his first season of football. He thought the sentence was too severe.—Mr Cavanagh’s motion was carried. A letter was received, through the Otago Sub-union, from the Woodlands Club protesting against the severity of the sentence imposed on Wybrow, and giving reasons for its contention. —On the motion of Mr Wootton it was decided to dismiss the appeal. It was also decided that if the Woodlands Club had fresh evidence to produce it should ask the subunion to reopen the case. A letter was received from the Marlborough Union stating _ that the team would arrive in Dunedin on August 3.

There would be 23 in the party.—Noted. J.' 0.
