PERSONAL AND SOCIAL

An interesting visitor to Wellington is an American woman journalist who arrived by tbe Maunganui from San Francisco this week. Madaline Spain, from Portland, Oregon, is travelling the ’world in search of news and adventure. She represents Arizona in the Great South West, as well as others of her country’s magazines. She is small, dark, with wavy hair and soft brown eyes, whose long curved lashes directly contradict the etfect of her brisk and business-like manner. "The women in America,” said Miss Spain in an interview, “ are intensely interested in women of other countries. I hope to find out all about your women’s clubs, as well as your famous Plunket Society and your schools, while I am here.” Miss Spain intends spending a month or six weeks in New Zeajand.

The prettiness of the girl musicians in their pink and blue flounced frocks, with ribbons in their hair and smiles on their fa'cee, and the smartness of the boy conductor in his velvet trousers and silk shirt, appealed to the eye at once when the Roland sextet made their appearance on the stage at the Savoy yesterday afternoon. Viennese panels, painted to.harmonise with* the colours of the girls dresses, formed a background for the six, and everything was lighted with warm pink flood and footlights—a delightful and graceful spectacle. This, combined with the array of chrysanthemums, poppies, and roses, with which the tea tables in the hall were adorned, helped to create a sympathetic atmosphere for the Viennese music which the sextet plajed. the same programme is to be repeated for the rest of the week, and cannot fail to excite pleasure and admiration. * * *
