BRITISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ CLUB
INAUGURAL DINNER The inaugural dinner of the British Public Schools’ Club (Otago) was held at Wains Hotel on Saturday evening, when “ Old Boys ” to the number of 19, representing 15 British schools, met together with guests representing some of the leading schools in New Zealand. A most enjoyable evening was spent. After dealing with the adequate fare provided the gathering settled down to a formidable programme, which was dealt with in an equally satisfactory manner. The proceedings commenced with the “ Loyal Toast,” which was proposed by the president, Mr E. Wood, at rather greater length than the perfunctory manner usually accorded to this toast. Then followed “ The British Public Schools,” proposed by Mr W. R. Brugh (Otago), and replied to by Mr E. L. Eastgate (Felsted); “ The Schools of New Zealand,” Mr S. E. D. Neill (Harrow), reply Mr E. A. Duncan (Waitaki); “The British Public Schools’ Club (Otago) ” Mr G. M. Lloyd (Nelson), reply Mr E. Wood (Dulwich); “Schoolmasters,” Mr H. de C. M‘Arthur (Christ’s Hospital), reply Mr C.- M. Gilray (Mill Hill and John M'Glashan); “ Our Guests,” Mr J. Sutherland Ross (Highgate), reply Mr F. M. Nancarrow (Christ’s); “The President,” Dr D. W. Carmalt Jones (Appingham), reply Mr E. Wood (Dulwich). Mr W. J. Morrell (Blundell’s) voiced the appreciation of the club of the action of Mr W. Cullen (Dulwich) in being the prime mover in suggesting the formation of the club. Mr Cullen replied. On behalf of the members the president made a presentation to the hon. secretary, Mr W. D. Jenkin (Dulwich), who, in replying, stated that he understood that there were “ Old Boys” in Otago who were eligible for membership, and with whom he had not been in touch; if they would let him have their names, schools, and dates he would be only too pleased to hear from them.
