DR PRENN DEFEATS TURNBULL MRS MOODY’S DECISIVE VICTORY (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 29. The Wimbledon tournament was continued to-day. In the third round of the singles Dr Prenn (Germany) defeated Turnbull (Australia) comfortably. After an early threat of serious opposition Turnbull was no match for the German’s strength and shrewdness. MIXED DOUBLES. Second Round. Borotra and Miss Nuthall defeated Latchford and Mrs Edwards 6 —2, 6—3. Crawford’s next match will be against Stedman, and if he wins his probable opponent in the quarter-finals will he Sutter, who to-day impressively defeated Cramm. He has a wide range of controlled strokes, and is less tempestuous than the other Americans. , Stedman, who was yesterday unduly distressed at the end of a long match, is to-day in bed with laryngitis. Ho offered to forfeit to Crawford. The match should have been played to-morrow, but Crawford refused, insisting on a postponement till Saturday to enable Stedman time to recover. Stedman’s indisposition is most unfortunate for he had recorded a very notable performance in going through three rounds on his first appearance at Wimbledon. At the same time he could hardly have been expected to defeat Crawford, whose present form eclipses anything he has previously shown on an overseas tour. The result of his match with the American Sutter, in the next round, will be awaited with keen interest. Dr Prenn, the well-known German player, whose recent exclusion from Germany’s Davis Cup team, the ground of his nationality occasioned some comment, eliminated Turnbull, who made a stand only in the first set. Austin maintained his form by a convencing defeat of Gledhill, but his countryman, L. R. Stoefen entered the fourth round by defeating W. H. Powell, a young English player, who formerly captained the Oxford team. The only result of interest in the Ladies’ Singles was the overwhelming defeat which Mrs Moody inflicted on the No. 1 English player, Miss M. Heeley, who collected only three games. Miss Heeley is 22 years of age and had a most successful season in England last year. The decisive nature of her defeat shows the extent to which Mrs Moody dominates this event. Three other players who have done well so far ‘are Miss K. E. Stammers, the young English player, Frl. Krawinkel, the rocklike German champion, and Mme. Mathieu, woman champion of France. LAST SIXTEEN IN SINGLES. LONDON, Juno 30. (Received June 30, at 8.30 p.m.) The countries and the number of players represented in the last 16 in the Singles at Wimbledon are as follows: Men’s Singles—United States 4, Britain 3, South Africa, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, France, Germany, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, and Australia 1. Women’s Singles. —Britain 7, United States 3, Germany and France 2, Switzerland and Italy 1. Perhaps the greatest surprise to-day was the defeat of Farquharson by Menzel in three straight sets. THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM. INVITATION FROM AMERICA. NEW YORK, June 29. (Received July 1, at 0.15 a.m.) It is learned that the JJnited States Lawn Tennis Association is making an effort to secure the Australian Davis Cup team for a modified tour of America, playing only in the National Singles at New York, the Doubles at Boston, an exhibition match at Chicago, and in the Pacific south-west championships at Los Angeles. The Australian management indicated that the team will have had such a long playing season with its departure from Europe that it would like to return to Australia direct. For that reason it was refusing to play in Japan.
