ABBEY STRONG-ROOM

The crypt beneath the Chapter House of Westminster Abbey was opened to the public for the first time a few weeks ago, and the guides were nearly overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to see this ancient room which has been fitted as a storehouse for the abbey’s most beautiful robes and fabrics. It to be open every Monday, with an admission charge of one shilling. The crypt is only 28Jft in diameter, and not many more than a dozen people can be Comfortably taken round at one time. The crypt is about 700 years old and is like a strong-box cut in stone. Its walls are 17ft thick, and one looks upward to the daylight through three sets of bars. The public can now examine the magnificent copes and banners, and the symbolic altar cloths which are ao impressive' a part of abbey ceremonial.
