The seventy-first anniversary of the original proclamation of Coromandel as a goldfield fell on June 25. The proclamation was made under the Goldfields Act, 1858, and was signed by the Governor, Sir George Grey, and by Sir William Fox. It constituted and appointed as a goldfield “ all land, being waste lands of the Crown, situate within that part of the Coromandel Peninsula lying to the' north of a line drawn from the mouth of the Waihou River on the west to the mouth of the Whitianga River on the east, thence following the Whenuakitc River to its source, and thence by a straight line to the Hoho point.” The proclamation took effect on July 1.
