WEATHER IN JUNE

AVERAGE RAINFALL LOW TEMPERATURES RECORDED, / _ The most noticeable features of the weather experienced in Dunedin during the month of June was the fact that rain foil on seven days in succession during the first week, the tjall in that period being 1.56 inches. The otiier feature was the long spell of fine, cold and calm weather experienced from June 16 to June 25. Extremely .cold weather was recorded on June 21, 22 and 23, heavy frosts being experienced pn those dates. The most severe frost was on June 21, when the temperature was 23 degrees at 8 d.m. The weather throughout the month was in keeping with midwinter conditions. Records- taken on the rain gauge on the roof of the Otago Daily Times building show that the rainfall for June was 2.01 inches, which represented a slight doorcase on the figures for the corresponding month last year, and a decrease of nearly three-quarters of an inch on tbe figures for May, Rain fell on 16 days last month, the heaviest fall being on June 1, when the instrument registered more than half an inch of rain. On June 6 the fal) was .28in, while nearly a quarter of an inch was registered on June 2. No rain fell between Juno 16 and 23.

There was a predominance during last mouth of calm days' and very light southwesterly and north-easterly winds. At no time did the wind reach more than moderate force. There was no wind from June IS to June 27. The following table show's the days on which rain fell , during the month of June:—

In 1924 the total rainfall was 24.25 inches, in 1925 29.87 inches, in 1926 35.34 inches, in 1927 38.53 inches, and in 1928 24.43 inches. JUNE TEMPERATURES.

The average maximum daily temperature for June was 45deg., which was about 7deg. less than the maximum for May. The average minimum temperature was 34deg., a decrease of about 2deg. on the figures for the previous month. The lowest temperature for June was 23deg., ‘ recorded on the morning of June 21. This low temperature represented lideg. of frost. The second lowest temperature was 26deg. on the morning of Juno 22, while 27deg. was registered on June 9, and temperatures of 30deg. were recorded on June 20 and 23. Temperatures as low as 33deg., 34dcg., and 35deg. were frequently registered. The first part of the month was marked by fairly even temperatures, but the thermometer reached its highest mark on June 13, when the reading was Sldeg. BAROMETER READINGS. The early part of June was marked by several fairly low barometer readings, The reading at midnight on Juno I was 20.35 in and 29.47 in was registered at 8 a.m. on June 2/ These were, the lowest readings for the month. The barometer rose sharply on the night of June 2, and continued to rise during the next 10 days until it registered 30.20 in on the morningSof June 12. The pressure then decreased for a time, but the barometer commenced to rise again on June 14, and. rising quickly registered 30.50 iii at midnight on June 15 arid 30.55 about 24 hours later. These were the, highest readings for the month. The pressure again decreased, and the readings during the next eight days were between 30.45 in and 30.15 in. The barometer rose to 30.22 in on the night of June 24, and fell to 30.07 in the next morning and then to 29.77 in about 1G hours later. Another high pressure period set in on the morning of June 20, ‘when the barometer rose from 29.80iu to 30.05 in in 36 hours. During the last three days of the month the readings were between SO.OOin and 30.20 in. The barometer had a rising tendency on the last day of June. JUNE SUNSHINE. The total amount of. sunshine for the month of June, as registered on the sundial on the roof of the Otago Daily Times building, was 70 hours, which was II hours 15 minutes less than the total for the previous month. It, however, represented an increase of about 5$ hours on the figures for the corresponding month last year. The lofigest periods of daily sunshine for the month ended yesterday were 7 hours 50 minutes on June 9, 7 hours 20 minutes on June 13, 7 hours 5 minutes on June 20, 5 hours 50 minutes on June 29, 5 hours 20 minutes on June 21, and 5 hours 5 minutes on June 14. The shortest periods were 5 minutes on June 19, 10 minutes on June 18 and 20, 15 minutes on June 8, 25 minutes on June 5, 30 minutes on June 10, and 30, 40 i minutes on June 0, 55 minutes on June 3, and 1 hour 20 minutes on June 7. On six days during the month there was no sunshine.
