THE UPPER SHOTOVER

BIG REVIVAL IN MINING DEVELOPMENT WORK (Special to Daily Times.) QTJ.EENSTOWN, June 28. Present indications point to a revival of mining on a large scale in the upper reaches'of the Shotover River. During the past few months several companies have been making their preliminary arrangements either in respect of flotation or in developmental work on their holdings. The latest news in mining circles is the marking out of-a dam site in the Shotover at the branches —the same site as was applied for on behalf of the Kawarau Gold Mining Company and recommended to the Minister in 1925. An application for a license for this dam site was lodged in the local Warden's Court at the week-end by Mr Joseph Stephens, who is interested with others in the enterprise. All the available ground in the Shotover below the Branches has also been .pegged out —a matter of 158 acres—by the same concern, which is said to have a strong financial backing.

In consequence of hard frosts experienced at Arrowtown early in the week the water supply to the irrigation pipe line had to be cut off. As the Golden Arrow and Messrs Smith and Hamilton's hydraulic claims are dependent on this column for their water they have had to be closed down temporarily.
