PROPOSED WOOL LEVY
STRONG OPPOSITION EXPRESSED MEAT AND WOOL BOARD SUGGESTED. (Per United Press Association.) MARTON, June 28. At a largely-attended meeting of farmers convened by the Marton branch of the Farmers' Union the question of the proposed levy of 3d a bale on wool, which has met with some opposition, was ably championed by Mr Lloyd Hammond, president of the Wellington Executive, and a member of the committee set up to further the proposal. Mr Hammond contended that the benefits of the woo! industry from experimental work would amply repay the farmers' small outlay. The principal speaker against the proposal, Mr A. L. Wheeler, a well-known sheep breeder, was present. He aliened that "No warning had been given that tlie occasion would be used for such a semipolitical purpose as to urge the Government to establish a wool levy." The feeling of the meeting was at times manifested in strong terms in opposition to the proposal to make a further increase in the cost of wool production. The following resolution was carried:"That this meeting strongly opposes any wool levy whatsoever and the appointment any further council or committee. We are desirous of benefiting the wool industry to the fullest extent and therefore emphatically urge the Government to extend the powers of the Meat Board to be a meat and wool board with full powers to help the wool industry to the extent it thinks fit."
