PORT CHALMERS NEWS
MUSSEL BAY Steady progress is being made with the reclamation work at Mussel Bay, and each succeeding day sees a difference in the general appearance of the area where the spoil spreads out after being pumped through the pipe-line through the tunnel from Beach road. The spoil, which now consists mostly of gravel, is gradually spreading towards the line of iron stakes across the bay. These stakes define the area which is to be filled in. It will require thousands of tons of spoil yet before the surface is brought to the required level. A number of relief workers are located at Mussel Bay this week, and during the past few days have been employed in erecting a brush wall across a part of the reclaimed area within a short distance of the lawn tennis cou-'s. NEW VALVE TESTED A new valve for the pumping station at Musselburgh was tested at Port Chalmers yesterday in the .presence of Mr W. J. Jacobson, engineer at the pumping station.. The valve is one of several which have been manufactured by Messrs Stevenson and Cook at different times for the Dunedin Drainage Board. It weighs over 11 tons, and its outstanding feature _ is the provision of a by-pass valve, which is operated by hand, to admit a supplementary supply of water to the pumps in case of emergency without stopping the machinery. Another feature is that it is the only part of what is known as the No. 5 duplicate pumping plant manufactured in New Zealand.
