TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The figures given by your Akaroa correspondent, B. E. Baughan, comparing the various Borstal institutions, make very disturbing reading; in fact, one might truly be horrified to contemplate their significance, and I would like to have more information on the subject of probation. How many of our young people ai*e put on probation each year, and is there any foundation for the fear that to put on probation, instead of sending to prison, encourages crime? Perhaps B. E.
