QUEENSTOWN NOTES (From Oun Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, June 28. ' FARMERS' UNION. A meeting of the Wakatipu branch of the Farmers' Union was held at Arrowtown on Saturday to discuss several matters of interest. Mr J. Cockburn presided. A letter was received from the Wheat Purchase Hoard relative to freight charges on wheat. This set out that the charges from Frankton wharf to Bluff were 26s 3d per ton. If the cost of cartage of wheat to the district mill exceeded the cost of taking it to Frankton wharf the farmer would be entitled to a refund of the difference. —In discussion it was pointed out that the charges were not uniform as far as district farmers were concerned. The secretary was instructed to write the board asking for further information. Mr C. Barnes, railway business agent at) Dunedin, wrote in reference to the question of freight on fencing posts carried by the lake steamers. It was regretted that no alteration could be made in the charges.—The question of improved loading facilities at Kingston was being investigated. The president reported that the Lake County Council was unable to see its way to make any reduction in the rates for the ensuing year. GOLF. ' The final round of the Major Browne Cup competition was played by the ladies'' section of the Wakatipu Club on Saturday. Mrs Wilkinson's consistent play won her the trophy, her net score being 160. Miss E. Southberg was runner-up with 172. • •- .. ■ A match for nine-hole players was won by Miss E. Curtis-, with a score of 48. Miss F. M'Bride came next with 50. In the men's section Murehison carried off the honours in a stroke competition, his net score being 72, Miller being close up with 73. BASKET BALL. On Saturday afternoon a Public School A team defeated Convent with a score of 17 —9; Arrowtown girls, playing the same afternoon against Queenstown Public B, registered a win of 27 points. SCHOOL APPOINTMENT. Mr Samuel M. Barclay, of Duntroon, has been appointed headmaster of the Queenstown Public School, vice Mr D. F. Macdonald, who has removed to Ashburton. GENERAL. Prior to his departure for Invercargill, Mr T, M'Neil, telephone exchange clerk at Queenstown, was presented by his fellow officers with a shaving outfit. Mr M'Neil left for his new post oh Friday.' His successor, Mr T. J. Donaldson, of the Telegraph Office. Invercargill, has taken up duty in the Queenstown office. The Lake County Council is at present co-operating with the Railways Department in protective work on the bank of the Mataura River, near Black bridge, where erosion was tnking place. Some members of the county staff are engaged on the work.
