OBITUARY
CAPTAIN J. R. M. MORLEY i The death occurred on June 22 at his residence, Wellington, at the age of 61 years, of Captain Joseph Robert Maryon Morley, master mariner. Captain Morley served his time on sailing ships, and had risen to the position of second mate when he was engaged by the Union Steam Ship Company in 1897 as fourth officer of the Mararoa. He served in many well-known vessels as third and second officer from 1898 to* 1902, and was then appointed chief officer of the Haupiri. He afterwards served in a similar capacity on the Rosamond, Waipori, Wainui- (old) .Rakanoa, Takapuna, Rotoiti and Wairuna (old). He was appointed master of the Kaituna in 1910, and afterwards held command of the steamers Kanna, Kurow, Kauri, Whangape and Koromiko. He retired from the eea in 1915 and joined the shore staff of the Union Company, but shortly after retired to go into private business. Captain Morley leaves a widow and three cb.ilI dren. , MR M. METZGER The death occurred on Friday after a long illness of Mr Martin Metzger, a very well-known resident of Invercargill, at the age of 63. Mr Metzger, who came to Invercargill from St. Louis, America, as a young man, entered the hotel business shortly after his arrival, first at Gladstone and then at Orepuki. ' There he remained for some years, subsequently becoming licensee of the Albion Hotel at Invercargill, then the leading licensed house in the town. /This, he retained until no-license was carried about 1910. While not a public man, Mr Metzger was always keenly interested in current affairs, and was of progressive ideas. Latterly he conducted a tobacconist's business in Dee street. MR P. A. Young, who, until his retirement •in 1927, was stores manager at the head office of the Union Steam Ship Company. MR JONATHAN HOLDEN (Per United Press Association,! DANNEVIRKE, June 26. The death is announced of Mr Jonathan Holden, a well-known stock breeder, of Makotuku, where he had resided for 30 years. He arrived from England in 1859, and had since resided in Hawke's Bay. He was a member for some years of the Waipawa and Dannevirke Hospital Boards, patron of the Dannevirke A. and P. Association, and the Dannevirke Racing Club. The deceased was a liberal donor to any deserving object. He leaves a widow and one eon. MR W. F. THOMSON (Per United Press Association.) NELSON, June 26. Mr W. F. Thomson, whose death has occurred, was a director of Messrs S. Kirkpatrick and Co., Ltd., and for many years held the position of factory manager, having been 49 years with the firm. MR WILLIAM KNOX A PROMINENT AUSTRALIAN. SYDNEY, June 26. (Received June 26, at 9 p.m.) The death is announced of Mr William Knox, a former chairman and managing i director of the' Colonial Sugar Refining I Company, Ltd., after a long illness; aged 86. He leaves a widow and four (laughters, one of the latter being the wife of Mr Colin Stephen, chairman of the Australian Jockey Club.
