OTAGO RUGBY UNION
COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT..
The weekly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr John Mitchell) occupied the chair. Mr W. Allen, president of the Taieri Club, wrote explaining why their full Second Grade team had not come to Dunedin on June 17 to play Alhambra. He stated that only eight players had been available, and they had travelled to Dunedin. This club was trying to play in five grades, and they had difficulty, through various causes, in fielding a full team in each grade. They were, however, endeavouring to meet all their obligations.—The explanation was accepted. M. Hollander, referee in the match between Port Chalmers and University G (Third Grade) reported having ordered oft* a Port Chalmers player for punching an opponent while he was on the ground. 'The player had admitted the offence. —The player wrote that he was unable to attend the meeting. He stated that he had only thrown his arms around the University player, and that the referee had misconstrued his action. —The referee appeared before the committee and said that the Port Chalmers player had struck the University man three times.—lt was decided to suspend the player for four playing Saturdays. A letter was received from the University Club suggesting that the match with its C team and Southern should be played as a curtain-raiser to the senior match at Carisbrook on Saturday. Both teams were so far unbeaten.—lt was decided that time would not permit the match to be played as a curtain-raiser. The Thames Rugby Union wrote suggesting that the Otago touring team of 1935 should play a Snatch against their representative team at Paeroa. —Consideration of the request was held pver. A letter was received from the Port Chalmers Cbib protesting against the system of grading players down from the senior teams to the junior teams. It was pointed out that four University B players had been regraded. and that they played against Port Chalmers on June 17.—Mr J. B. Wootton, chairman of the Flag Committee, said that the A and B teams were playing on that date, and that they had to find games for all players. The committee was regrading players in other clubs every Saturday under similar circumstances.—lt was decided to inform the Port Club that the gradings were quite in order. L. Scott was granted a transfer from the Taieri Club to the West Taieri Club. A letter was received from the South Otago Sub-union stating that as the result of an inquiry by the Management Committee into the circumstances of an assault by a Woodlands player (A. Wybrow) on an Owaka player (R. Jackman) at the conclusion of the match between the two teams, it had been decided to disqualify Wybrow for three years.— The secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) said that" it was alleged that Jackman had struck Wybrow during the course of the game, and that Wybrow had said he would see him after the match. —It was decided to ask the sub-union to supply a copy of the evidence taken at the inquiry.
