THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 1862. Shipping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

The James Booth, which we had noted among the expected arrivals from England, arrived some weeks ago at Melbourne, and a number of passengers who were bound for Otago, have since arrived here.

... A party of miners at Waipori are about to commence the " hydraulic " system of mining. This plan, as 'many of our readers will be aware, has been adopted in California with extraordinary success. Should it be found to be, as is expected, well adapted for this country, its introduction will form a new era in mining affairs, as thousands of acres that would not pay on the ordinary system of mining, would yield handsome returns if washed down bodily by, the hydraulic plan, which consists in directing from a hose a powerful stream of water against the Eide of a hill and washing it away through sluices. We believe Mr. Barr, the chief Postmaster, has accepted the tenders of Mr. Wm. Bell, Dunedin, for the conveyance of the mails overland between Dunedin and Port Chalmers. The mail is intended to leave Dunedin twice a day—in the morning and in the afternoon; and from Port Chalmers, also, twice—at midday and in the evening; but the hours have not.yet been definitely fixed upon. . . . An aboriginal native was brought before the Resident Magistrate's Court, Port Chalmers, the other day for the theft of a woollen shirt from Mr. Levi's store. The friends of the accused returned the article, and paid into court 405., or four times its value, and he was accordingly dismissed, such being the punishment which is by Ordinance provided for theft committed by a native. The new theatre is to be_ opened on Friday next with a subscription ball. The names of the stewards, which appear in another Column, ufi'ord a guarantee that the arrangements will be all that can be desired. A .large and respectable attendance is anticipated. . . . ARRIVAL OF THE ESCORT. The escort, which arrived in town yesterday evening, brought the following quantities of gold:—From Tuapeka, 2519 ozs. 10 dwts.; Waitahuna, 600 ozs. 15 chvts.; Woolshe.U, 152 ozs. 10 dwts. T0ta1—3,572 ozs. 15 dwts.
