RELIEF WORKERS About 100 unemployed were engaged on various relief works in the Port Chalmers Borough yesterday. 1 This total included 25 waterside workers. The men were assigned to the borough reserves, streets,, and the foreshore, while a number were engaged ' at MusseJ Bay in connection with the reclamation work in progress there. A fairly large consignment of boots has come to hand, and the first issue in the Port Chalmers district was made last night, when about 60 pairs were distributed to relief workers.' BAND QUEEN CARNIVAL Interest in the queen carnival promoted by the Port Chalmers Band in aid of its new uniform fund is being well maintained. The voting for the choice of the three queens selected has been fairly heavy. The first results were posted yesterday, when coloured flags denoting the position of the queens were hoisted on the band rotunda. The flag representing the sports queen was at the top and the voting at 1 p.m. showed that this lady (Miss Porter) had a lead of 131 votes. The band queen (Miss Hutton) was next in order, followed by the unemployed queen (Miss Watson). GOLF CLUB The first qualifying round of the Ladies' Golf Championship (Port Chalmers Club) was played on the Sawyers' Bay links under very favourable conditions on Saturday afternoon. The following were the best scores handed in:—Mrs Fletcher 87, Mrs M'Allnn 91, Mrs Crawford 94, Miss M. Wilson 105, Mrs Hopkins 110, Miss B. Jackson 110, Miss Morgan 112, Mrs Blackman 112, Mrs Edgar 112, Mrs Campbell 112, Miss Osborn 114, Miss Parry 114. The second qualifying round will be played on Saturday afternoon.
