BOXING
AMATEUR TOURNAMENT NOVICE AND OPEN BOUTS , DECIDED. ’ « The first of a series of amateur tournaments to be conducted by the Otago Boxing Association was held in His Majesty’s Theatre last evening, when a fair attendance of enthusiasts witnessed some fast, and willing contests. Ten novice and seven open bouts were decided, the, novices going three twominute rounds and the fighters in the open section three rounds of three, minutes each, and although all the fights were willingly contested, there was only one clean knock out, although on several occasions a, bout failed to go the full disMessrs J. Kilmartin and A. Macdonald acted as referees and Messrs P. Ruston, W. D. Wilson, and P. Young as judges. . Following are the results: — NOVICE SECTION. ’ BANTAM-WEIGHT. L. Greaney 8.2 beat B. Reeves 8.4. Greaney attacked from' the gong, and, making good play with a raking left, found Reeves a comparatively easy target. Halfway through the second round, Reeves was badly rattled by a stiff left to the chin, and the referee declared Greaney the winner. FEATHER-WEIGHT. W. N. Greaney 8.9 .beat P. Ruston 8.12. This was a willing bout between twp game.-lads, and for the first two rounds Ruston was well ahead on points. In the last Greaney commenced to make up his leeway, and the pair stood toe to toe and mixed it until the referee stopped the /fight and gave the decision to Greaney. R. Crawford 9.0, a bye. Final. \ Greaney beat ■ Crawford. This was the best bout of the evening, and in the initial stages there was little to choose between the pair. In the last round they fought one another all over the ring, and there was a very narrow margin between them at the finish. LIGHT-WEIGHTS. First Round. J. E. Barrington 9.7 beat J. O’Neill 9.10. Barrington carried the fight to his opponent all the time and got in some good work with heavy rights to the head and body. Both lads were inclined to hit wildly, and there was little between them. 11. 'H. Cumberbeacb a bye. Final. - Barrington beat Cumberbeacb. This was one of the poorest bouts of the evening, both lads wrestling their way through the first two rounds. Barrington connected several times with his right in the last, and was declared the winner. WELTER-WEIGHT. First Round. R. Campbell 10.9 beat J. Arnott 10.4. Campbell went into his opponent from the gong, and, although his timing and direction were at times faulty, he scored frequently, his principal weapon being' a heavy right to the body. J. ( G. Willamson 10.6, a bye. Final. Campbell beat Williamson, As in his previous bout, Campbell made the lighting throughout, the towel coming in from Williamson’s corner halfway through the second round. middle-weight: First Round. W. Meehan 11.6 beat A. Williams 11.6. For the first round honours were fairly even, but in the last two Williams began to light wildly, and Meehan, bringing a good left into play, administered some solid punishment. Second Round. P. Wilkinson 11.0 beat W. Bartholomew 11.1. Bartholomew was the aggressor in the two first rounds, but Wilkinson used his feet and ducked cleverly to keep himself out of trouble. In the third round Wilkinson went in and mixed it, and, after putting his opponent down for eight, he finally scored a clean knock-out just as the gong sounded. Final. Meehan 11.6 beat Wilkinson 11.0. Meehan was the straighter hitter of the
two, and outranged his opponent, with a raking left that proved particularly effective in the last round. OPEN SECTION. FLY-WEIGHT. \ First Round. C. Leader 8.0 beat W. Drew 7.6. What Drew lacked in weight he amply made up, for in gamenesg and although out-fought in every round he put up a willing fight and was going as strongly as ever when the gong sounded. L. Healey 8.0, a bye. Final. Leader beat Healey. , Leader was never properly extended and he scored' a comfortable win. Although Healey was always willing to make a fight of it, he slacked the experience and skill of his opponent, and Leader had his measure throughout. ’ WELTER-WEIGHT. First Round, P. Hood 10.3 beat V. Conder 10.7. This was an uninteresting bout, Conder’s seconds skying the towel in the second round. D. Stirling 10.7, a bye. Final. Stirling beat Hood. Stirling was the cleverer boxer of the two but Hood made good use of the ring and got himself out of a lot of trouble cleverly, especially in the first two rounds. In the last, Stirling kept at close quarters and dealt out some solid punishment, and when the gong went there was, a fair margin of points in his' favour.
