TROTTING
By Sentinel. Mountain Dell and Chenwood will be driven by J. Fraser, jun,, at the Auckland meeting. Brent Zolock, who has raced successfully for the Feilding trainer, W. Hughes, this season, has been sent south to join J. J. Kennerley’s stable. There are very few classes-to suit this pure sprinter in the north. ChenAA’ood should race well at Auckland, for he appears to be more at home ou right-handed courses. It Avill be remembered that he Avon the Cheviot Gold Cup on a course where they raced the reverse way to Addington. Chenwood is a good beginner, and he is in great order for immediate engagements. F. G. ‘Holmes has the three-year-old pacer Golden Direct in great heart for his Greyrnouth assignments. On Thursday morning at Addington the pacer went a mile in resolute style. J. J. Kennerley gave bis three candidates'for the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting good, serviceable work at Addington on Thursday. They are Peter Junior, Tho rawer thy, and Rare Pronto. Iheir task was a mile and which they covered in 3min 7sec. They travelled in the middle of the course all the way, and finished well. ~ , , In her final work-out for Auckland at Addington ;,on Thursday, Mountain Dell pleased greatly. Her assignment was one mile and a-half, and she was driven by J, Fraser, jun. She covered the nrst mile in 2min 24sec, the mile and a-quarter in Smin Isec, and the full distance in 3min 35 3-ssec. She was driven on the outside of the track, and she finished brilliantly. . Horses likely to be in favour for their engagements at Timaru to-day are Iron Man, Great Minto, Royal Escort, and Ronald Derby. . ‘ Great Minto, who won at Ashburton and is also engaged at Timaru to-day, has an infusion of thoroughbred blood in his pedigree that unquestionably helps to impart speed and stamina into a horse. Great Minto was got by Great Audubon from Princess Minto by Prince Imperial —Dolly by Sacramento—from a mare by the thoroughbred horse Perken Warbeck 11. , , , Mr W. Balloch, who has been associated with the light harness sport for a number of years in Melbourne, decided some time ago to retire, and he has now advertised his entire holding ot light harness horsea for sale. Included in the batch is a half-brother by Globe Derby to the New Zealand-bred, filly, Pendant, who ran third in the last Melbourne Derby. Mr Balloch Avas the oAvner of tfie good trotter, Surprise Journey, before that stallion Avas brought to Ncav ZeaSome years ago the Western Australian Trotting Association imported Avell-bred stallions and mares from America, and at a recent meeting the progeny of a couple Avere successful. Peter Stretta, one of the importations, figured as the 6ire of Quick March, a rising four-year-old trotter equal to winning a Trotters Handicap of two miles at a 2.29 i rate. Peggy Vonia, the other American, Avas represented by Von Sheik, also rising four years. This young pacer is speedy, and Avon three times out of fiA r e starts. Sheik, hig sire, holds the record (hoppled) for two miles (4.24) kt Harold Park, Sydney; Jolly Wave bCTtered 3.17 for the mile and a-half when he finished fourth in the Acton Handicap at Ashburton. In a field of 18, and from 48 yards, it was a very fine effort to get so close when the speed was on all the way. Jolly Wave is a reliable pacer and a genuine stayer, and this performance alone (says Ribbonwood) puts him in line for further honours in the new season. With better tracks and more opportunities, the Wavcrley pacer has improved out of all knowledge since L. A. Maidens brought him from Southland.
Arethusa baa raced disappointingly this season. When she put up a twomile record of 4.24 for three-year-olds two years ago, it looked as though she would develop into one of the best distance performers in the land, but although she has gone near to repeating these figures, she has not improved and cannot stay as well ns a five-year-old as she did when a filly. She is still a young mare, however, and a spell may prove beneficial. Moriori, a recent registration, is_a two-year-old black gelding by Last PointerProud Maid, and was bred and is owned by J. S. Wilson. Other registrations of interest are Author’s Choice, a three-year-old filly by Young AuthorElectric Huon; Black Metal, five-year-old mare by Metal —White Raven; Garry Thorpe, six-year-old gelding by Le Thorpe —Mooney; General Sarsfield, two : year-old adding by Rey de Oro —Lady Renetta, and Lord Wrack, three-year-old gelding by Wrack —Noiseless,
