ROOSEVELT ECONOMY

PROPOSED CUT IN PENSIONS LIMITED BY SENATE. WASHINGTON, June 9. The Senate’s revolt has upset President Roosevelt’s economy-programme by 175,000,000 dollars (£35,000,000 at par). Even this curtailment of the cuts Mr Roosevelt asked for would have been nearly doubled but for the casting vote of the Vice-President (Senator Garner). Th Senate has limited Mr Roosevelt’s reduction of war veterans’ compensation to 25 per cent. Senator Garner saved it from being limited to 15 per cent. A conference of both Houses is expected to accept the Senate’s curb on Mr Roosevelt. Senator Walsh (Democrat) crystallised Congress sentiment regarding the veterans’ reductions.

“ Everyone is agreed that economies are necessary, and we passed the Bill giving the President power to reduce veterans’ payments, but it is apparent to even the children on the highways that a grave injustice has been done. “How can we go back to the people and say we did not correct them when the opportunity came?” he said.
