THE WORLD’S PEACE

to THE EDITOR. Sir, —In his letter of your issue of the 14th inst., Mr W. Jones says that “we have the promotion of peace practically in our hands.” I agree with him, except for the word “practically.” The decision as to war or peace lies entirely in the hands of the people. Unfortunately, they do not realise either their power or the necessity for its use. It should be the aim of those working wholeheartedly for the abolition of war to bring the people to a knowledge both of their power and of the urgent necessity for its use. Gow ernments can make wars; but without the concurrence of at least a majority of the people they cannot carry them on. A vague feeling against war is not enough; that is easily overcome by a strong minority using all the means of propaganda in its hands. There must be a convinced and determined attitude on the part of the majority of thinking people that war shall not be. It is to turn the general feeling against war into an effective force that the No More War Movement, in New Zealand and elsewhere, is working. We' welcome the co-operation of all those who are working on the same lines as ourselves. Mr Jones is doing splendid work, individually. We invite him, and those who think as he does, to get into touch with us. More can be accomplished by a combination of forces than by individual effort.—l am, etc,, M. Baxter, Hon. secretary. Dunedin branch, NeH Zealand No More War Movement. : Brighton, June 15.
