PROPOSED CONVENTION

ABANDONED IN MEANTIME CONFERENCE NEXT. YEAR. MELBOURNE, June 14. The Commonwealth Government has abandoned for the time being its proposal to hold a Constitution Convention. When the question was discussed at the Premiers’ Conference only Tasmania and South 'Australia supported the Commonwealth Government’s plan. The other States supported a proposal by Mr Stevens that before the convention was held a conference of Premiers should deal with the existing difficulties and in effect carry out useful preparatory work. It was agreed that a conference bo held early in 1034. The Premier of Western Australia (Mr Collier) indicated that he would submit a case for the separation of Western Australia from the Commonwealth to the Imperial authorities. Mr Collier implied rejection of the case for secession by adding that after the decision was reached he was prepared to participate in any conference with the other States and later to join in a Constitution Convention.
