OTAGO RUGBY UNION

MEETING OF COMMITTEE The meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union last night was presided over by Mr J. Mitchell (president). Mr D. C. Jolly reported on the improvements which had been effected in the shower room at Tahuna Park, which had now been roofed in. RANFURLY SHIELD. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote asking if the Otago Union had any suggestions to make with regard to the rules and regulations for the conduct of the season’s Ranfurly Shield matches. Messrs D. M. Spedding and H. Harris suggested that challenging teams on tour for the shield should be paid on only half expenses. Minor unions issuing special challenges were afforded free trips through the Dominion at someone clse’s expense. Mr J. B. Wootton moved— That challenging teams should be x-equired to pay their own expenses.”—This was agreed to, some members expressing the opinion that the competition should be confined to major unions only. APPLICATION HELD OYER.

An application from the Zingari-Rich-mond , Club for permission to enter a Fifth Grade team in the competition was held over in view of the fact that,_ at the moment, no other club seemed anxious to put a Fifth Grade team in the lipid. PAYNE TROPHY. * The Canterbury Union wrote confirming July 29 as the date for the Payne Trophy match. Mr Spedding said July 29 would not suit Otago, and he had told Christchurch that.Mr Harris said they should advise the northern union that July 29 had not been agreed upon, and that it was too early yet for the Otago Union to make definite arrangements.—-This was agreed to. TRANSFER. The transfer of A. Gibson from the Pioneer Club (Gore) to Kaikorai was approved. THIRD GRADE PLAYER SUSPENDED. The referee in the Third Grade match between Ravensbourne and Union wrote concerning bad language used to him by the captain of the Ravensbourne team. Other players were also involved. The writer furnished details of the obscenities used, and advised that he had instructed the captain of the team to appear before the union.

The referee and two players appeared before the meeting. The referee confirmed what he had written and the players were heard, both stating that they considered that they were entitled to say what they liked to a referee once the game was concluded. Mr Spedding said it was one of the worst cases the union had had before it for a long time, and he would move that the captain of the team should be suspended until the end of the 1934 season. Mr T. O’Shea suggested adjourning the matter to allow of an inquiry by the Ravensbourne Club, but Mr D. M. Stuart said there was a clean cut case against the two players who had appeared that night, and they should deal with them summarily. The chairman agreed with Mr Stuart, and said lie thought Mr Spedding had erred on the side of leniency in the matter of punishment. Mr Spedding then moved that the suspension should extend until the end of the 1935 season. Several members considered the sentence too light, and Mr I. Grant moved ns an amendment that the captain should be suspended until the end of 1936 season. The original motion was finally carried. The suggestion that the player should be ordered off all grounds under the jurisdiction of the union was considered impracticable. With regard to the case of the second player, it was decided.to hold the matter over pending an inquiry by the Ravensbourne Club into the conduct of its team and scape of the spectators last Saturday. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ MATCH. August 12 was approved as the date for the representative match between Otago and Southland primary schools.
