ST. KILDA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Beattie) and Crs W. G. Bird, H. H. Leary, J. Robinson, J. A. Carman, G. Glue, R. J. Griffiths, B. W. Hunter, S. Huntley, A. D. Edgar, and N. D. Anderson. The town clerk submitted a report which showed that •>,448,000 gallons of water were used in the borough during the past two weeks, at a cost of £136 4s. j During the first week 2,699.000 gallons were used, and 2,749,000 gallons during the second week. The amount paid for I water for the previous two weeks was j £134 Is. . | It was reported that the water mams i in Grove and Princes streets required I attention, and the borough plumber was j instructed to submit a report on the mains to the next meeting of the council. A letter was received from the office of the Unemployment Board stating that the protest made by the council against the arrangements for the issue of boots to relidf workers had been noted. —The letter was received. The chief postmaster at Dunedin advised that approval had been obtained for 1 the expenditure incurred in connection ! with repairing the clock on the St. Kilda | Post Office. The work would be undertaken by the Public Works Department.— j Received. . ' The Unemployment Board advised that i the State Forest Service _ would have a surplus of tree stocks available after the winter programme of the department had been provided for. Supplies from such surplus would be available to local bodies, as the Unemployment Board directed. The board desired that where possible local bodies having suitable areas should avail themselves of tile offer and organise a programme for the utilisation of unemployed labour in preparing the ground and planting the trees. The State Forest Service stipulated that orders fbr fewer than 2000 trees would not be supplied. l — letter was received. i A letter was received from the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board in connection with the council's application j for the installation of two mud tanks and j the lowering of gratings of .five other ' tanks in the St. Kilda area. The request: for a tank at the intersection of Richardson and Chapman streets was reasonable, | and authority had been granted for the ■ Work to be done. Permission for the i laying of a temporary pipe from the channel at the 1 intersection of Dalgety | and Driver streets to discharge over the gratings of the tanks had been granted., In the ease of the five mud tanks on the | south side of Driver street, it was pointed out that the street channel had been constructed at a lower level than the gratings, and flooding occurred. The cost of lowering the gratings would be a charge against the council, as its representative fixed the level originally. The cost of lowering the gratings would be £4 15s. The tank required at the intersection of Driver and Dalgety streets would be in- i stalled by the board. In regard to the area between Cakler street and Bay View . road, this came within the scheme for j South Dunedin, and nothing cotiid be done in the meantime.—lt was decided , that the conditions as outlined by the Drainage Board should be accepted. 1 The town clerk of Green Island advised j that Mr D. Mann had been appointed a traffic inspector for the borough of Green Island. The council was agreeable that Mr A. Callander should be appointed a traffic inspector for the Borough of St. . Kilda. It was felt that the arrange- j ments entered into would be of mutual benefit.—lt was resolved that the ap- | pointment of Mr Callander be confirmed. The foreman reported that footpaths bad been patched during the past fortnight. Anld, Albert, and Gourley streets would be sealed. The work for the ensuing fortnight would include patching of footpaths and streets and drainage. During the period under review 150 unemployed men had been engaged in cutting trees and removing grass from various streets.—The report was adopted. I

The Finance Committee reported that accounts amounting to £sooj 6s 6d had been passed for payment. The borough traffic inspector reported that 382 drivers’ licensee and eight heavy traffic licenses had been issued during the past fortnight.
