FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

FORESTERS. There was a large attendance of members at the meeting of Court Pride of the Leith, held on Wednesday last, with the C.R. (Bro. G. C. Morgan) in the chair. Business dealing with the welfare of the court was considered and dealt with, aiid the Otago Friendly Societies’ Council for; warded the result of the decisions oi lodges in connection with the proposed panel medical scheme, and also stated that the combined church parade of all societies would be held at St. Matthew s Church on the first Sunday in August. The S.C.R. reported on official visits to Courts Robin Hood,: Marion, and Queen of Green Island, and the J.W. gave a report on -the card match at Court St. Andrews. One new member was admitted with the usual ceremonies. It was decided that the following motion, proposed and seconded by P.D.C.R.’s Bros. R. S. .Vercoe and H. C. Williamson, be inserted in the records of the court: —“ That this court extends heartiest congratulations to Court Secretary Bro. J. K. Macfie on his election to the presidency of the Dominion Council of Friendly Societies; and, further, that this court recognises the personal honour and acclaims the honour conferred on the court and the United Otago District, A.0.F., as a tangible recognition of the energy, ability, and enthusiasm displayed in the service of Forestry by its secretary.” It was decided to hold a social dance on the Scottish night, as set down in the syllabus, and to invite Courts King Edward’s Pride and Woodland’s Pride. As the promoters had not been able to arrange a suitable debate for the evening, it was arranged to bold impromptu speeches, and these proved to be both interesting and amusing. A special feature was the splendid efforts of the younger members, many of whom made their maiden speech that evening. Prior, to the close of the meeting, ' the secretary gave a short account of = the proceedings of the annual meeting of the Dominion Council of Friendly Societies held n't Wellington last week. The C.R.. Sis. M. Henke, presided over a good attendance' of officers and members of Court St. Andrew’s at the last meeting last Monday, Correspondence was dealt with from the Otago Friendly Societies’ Council regarding the panel scheme and notifying of the annual church parade. Reports were submitted on official visits to Courts Robin Hood,. King Edward’s Pride, Marion, and Queen of Green Island, at each of which a large number of local members had attended. A report was also given on the recent Foresters’ ball, which had been a huge success, and also on the election and installation of the officers of the juvenile branch, Court Advance. Visitors from Courts Pride of the Leith, Pride of Dunedin, and Enterprise were welcomed by the C.R. and accorded the usual toast, to which each court responded. During the meeting one new member was admitted and four nominations were received, while -one member was granted a transfer. At the conclusion of. the meeting the second round of the 500 card com petition was held, the draw being Court Pride of the Leith versus Court Pride ot Dunedin, and Court Enterprise a bye. The game resulted in Court Pride of Dunedin winning by 5 games to 1. The fortnightly meeting of Court Pride of Green Island was held on Monday hist, when I.P.C.R. Bro. J. Freeman presided over a fair attendance of members. A discussion took place on the advisability of appointing a member to visit brethren while laid, aside in hospital, and it was finally decided to approach the District Executive on the matter. Notice was received from the Otago Friendly Societies Council that the combined church parade would be held on Sunday, August 6, and to be held at St. Matthews’ Churchy Bro. MThail reported on the official visit to Court Queen of Green Island, and urged on the brethren to attend the next function in even greater numbers.

The fortnightly meeting of Court Pride of Gore was held at Gore on Thursday last, when C.R. Bro. A. T. Newman presided over a good attendance of members. Two members were reported to be on the. sick funds at present. Several matters appertaining to thevwelfare of the court were dealt with satisfactorily, and one new member was initiated into the Order in the usual manner. Following the business meeting, a social evening was held, and dancing indulged in to music, supplied by Mr Walker, and a successful function terminated at a late hour.

The fortnightly meeting of Court Excelsior was held last Tuesday. The C.R., Bro. S. presided over a full attendance of officers, and a - good attendance of members. Correspondence was received from the District Executive regarding the annual church parade to be held on August 6. P.C.R. Bro. J. C. S. M'Minn reported on the combined Foresters’ ball held on June 3. It was decided to send an invitation to the district trustees (Bros. Wilson and Abbott) to be present next court night, June 20, when the District Executive would make a presentation to P.C.R. Bio. W. R. G. Hearns, who had been 44 years a district trustee. The C.R. reported on the visits to .Courts King Edward’s Pride and Queen of Green Island. At the close of the meeting the C.R. welcomed a large number of members of the Mornington Association Football Club and Harrier Club, Mr Hall responding on behalf of the footballers and Mr Sanders for the harriers. A progressive euchre tournament was held, Mr J. Robertson being the winning footballer, and Mr J. C. Isaacs the winning harrier. ODDFELLOWS. At Leith Lodge a fair attendance of members greeted the N.G., Bro. J. Kennedy, at the last meeting. A comprehensive report was tabled by the Visiting Committee, and members expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the sick were attended to. One candidate for membership was admitted, and was initiated in a very impressive manner by the officers of the lodge. I n view of the opening of the euchre tournament, a team was selected to represent Leith Lodgfe in the various matches, with Bro. J. Kenndy, N.G., as leader. The secretary presented the annual balance sheet, which showed the funds of the lodge to, be in a very sound position. The members expressed themselves as highly gratified with the result of the year’s working, and voiced their appreciation .of the ability and interest displayed by the secretary,, Bro. D. M. Miller. The lodge auditors were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their services. After the supper adjournment the following visitors responded:—P.G. Bro. Z. Dunn (Pioneer), P.G. Bro. D. Harborne (Linden), At Maori Hill Lodge N.G. Bro. W. C. ’Jamieson presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the last meeting. The secretary reported on the sick brethren, and arrangements were made to carry out the necessary visitation. A request from District Lodge as to whether Maori Hill would' enter a team for the forthcoming competitions was left over until next meeting. The lodge went into recess, and teams representing Pioneer and Leith were in attendance to compete in the card tournament' arranged by district lodge. After a very enjoyable game. Pioneer and Leith each scored a twopoint win. The N.G. took the opportunity of extending his thanks' to the visitors. He said it was particularly pleasing to welcome visitors from sister lodges, and trusted that during his term he would have the pleasure of their company on many future occasions. The following visitors responded:—D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge, N.G. Bro. J. Kennedy (Leith). N.G. Bro. F. Bohm (Pioneer).

At Linden Lodge a good attendance of members greeted the acting N.G. (Bro. E. Smith) at the regular meeting. Sick reports were dealt with, and correspondence from the District Lodge concerning initiatory competitions was received. It

was resolved that Linden enter a team for: the competition, which' would take place in August. Arrangements were made in regard to rehearsals, and it is confidently anticipated that with the material on hand Linden will have no difficulty in retaining the competition cup. The lodge then adjourned, and the syllabus item was proceeded with.- Secretary Bro. F. W. Joseph gave a very interesting paper on “ Instructions for Lodge Officers. The speaker dealt very fully with the necessary duties of each officer, and also explained the methods of chairmanship. Several members expressed their appreciation of the instruction given. A vote of thanks was accorded Bro. Joseph, and the hope was expressed that a similar paper would be given in the near future. Arrangements were made to entertain Rebekah sisters at the next meeting. . , ■ At St, Kilda Lodge a large attendance of members and visitors was present at the last meeting, Bro. W. Sheffelbien occupying the chair. Correspondence was received from the United Friendly Societies’ Council intimating that the annual church parade of all friendly societies would be held on August 6 at St. Matthew’s Church. It was decided to give a decision at next meeting regarding the initiatory competitions. On a recess being called, the District Committee conducted the card tournament. Teams were present from Linden and Unity Lodges, the games resulting in a draw. The N.G. extended a welcome to P.G. Bro. G. D. Smart, now of Lodge, Christchurch. Bro. Smart expressed his Measure at being present, and said be always endeavoured to visit the lodge of his former activities. He extended greetings from Ridgely Lodge. Other visitors responding were P D D.G.M. Bro. D, Swinton (Unity) aiid P.G. Bro. R. S. Kirkham (Leith). GOOD TEMPLARY. The weekly meeting of the Star of the South Juvenile Temple was held on luesday last. Bro. J. Haig, chief templar, presided over a poor attendance. Superintendent Bro. J. Hilton was in charge. After the usual business Bro. E. Brooks, assistant superintendent, took charge ana several games were played. In spite of the inclement weather there was a good attendance of members and visitors at the weekly meeting of Rescue Lodge. C.T. Bro. E. J. lies presided, and extended a welcome to the visiting members. Reports on the juvenile branch showed good progress and keen interest being taken. A request was received from the All Nations Lodge for the Mock Wedding to be repeated at its next session. The request was acceded to. Inc programme for the evening was barren and Temperance,” consisting of several sacred recordings, temperance readings, and the singing of sacred songs.
