SENIOR COMPETITION TAIERI DRAWS WITH SOUTHERN UNION DEFEATS ALHAMBRA The. Rugby football Senior competition wa s advanced a stage further on Saturday, when fine weather favoured the games, although some of the grounds were rather on the heavy side. The surprise of the day was Taieti’s draw against the leading team (Southern), neither side scoring in an exciting and hard-fought game. Union downed Alhambra by 11 points to 8, whilst University A scored a runaway win over Zingari-Richmond by 40 points to 3. Kaikorai had no ditnculty in defeating University B by 34 points to 12, and Pirates beat Dunedin by 20 points to 4. The, following are the results:— Southern .. SOUTHERN v. TAIERI The match at Carisbrook between Southern and Taieri provided a solid contest between two hard-working sets of forwards, and the interest of the spectators was maintained right up to the final whistle. The game was fast, and attack and counter-attack follow’ed each other in quick succession. The teams were as follows: . L ... .

Taieri opened from the Cargill road end, and after their passing from a scrum had! broken down M'Skimming missed with a penalty shot. Trevathan kicked' out in the face of an ensuing Taieri rush, and play rested at midfield. From loose play the ball was kicked to Trevathan, standing at his twenty-five, and he got in a good line kick, and Bathgate gained ground after receiving a pass from a scrum, at the Taieri twentyfive. Taieri, were awarded a free kick at the halfway, flag*, and Bathgate made a run and passed to Ball, who crosspunted, the ball going out at the Southern twenty-five. . Taieri kept up the pressure. M'Skimming fielded a kick from Sutherland, arid kicked, to Trevathan who marked’ near his line. Taieri were awarded: a free kick from a scrum, M'Skimming missing and Trevathan returning well. The Taieri forwards again attacked, and a good opening by Bathgate' was spoilt by Ball trying to. go too far. At last, Sutherland drove back the attack with a line-finder. Brown tried to get his backs moving . from loose forward play, hut the Taieri backs failed_to make ground. Their forwards came with plenty of dash and were aided by a free kick, and play then rested ati halfway. Two. free, kicks ~-in succession helped Southern, but passing out to M'Kerrow from a’ scrum failed to gain ground. A free kick by. Sutherland put Southern ,in position, but they could not hold the advantage. A fine kick by Murdoch held Taieri 'in . position af,ter "Southern had blocked a; passing movement, arid a throw-in followed at the Southern twenty-five. Taieri kept up the pressure, and from, passing at a scrum Simon got offside, M'Skimming missing and Trevathan returning: well. The Taieri forwards were worrying ..the opposition, and the play was invested with plenty of dash.. ■ Findlay missed with a penalty right bn the centre, line, and play went to .the Southern twenty-five. Trevathan gairied ground with a penalty and sent back another attack started by a penalty, M'Kerrow knocked ■ on in a promising movement, and' Murdoch and M'Skimming came back with a good run to ’the;■ open side from, a high kick by a Southern man,, play again going to the Southern twenty-five. Strnchan headed a good forward rush which had Taieri in trouble,,: but ,'a.’fr£e Hick .helped the country team, Findlay, sending out at the halfway flag. Another free kick to Taieri put them at the Southern twentyfive. A short punt from a scrum by Bathgate saw the Taieri forwards surg : ing to the line, a free kick bringing relief to the, town side,’ Murdoch saving by marking and kicking out at the centre flag. Osborne also,, marked when the Southern men were on him. Fast following up stopped the return and half time went with play in neutral territory. Southern .. .. .. .. Nil. Taieri .. .. ' Nil. ; A free kick was awarded, Taieri at the halfway flag, Findlay sending out near the Southern line.' M'Leod went off, and E. Sinclair Came on. Strachau led a ; counter attack. Wild passing, by Taieri was retrieved by M'Skimming,, and a scrum was formed at the Taieri- twentyfive. From a throw-in at the Taieri line Broadley led a great rush which ended at the Taieri twenty-five.. Bathgate short-punted, and Trevathan fumbled, Southern forcing, y Finlayson and Slyfield: led another great forward rush, but Taieri passing broke down. , Trevathan got in. a fine line kick- from a penalty, and then he .forced Taieri with a hard kick. Southern kept up the pressure, solid tackling : by the Taieri men smothering the movement,. Osborne cut off a pass from Simon' at a scrum and ran past halfway, but he was unsupported. Findlay put the ball out right at the Southern corner from, a penalty, and T revathan marked on his line from loose play. ’ The ball was kicked out at midfield, and from the throw-in Southern came away with a fine passing movement, : a Southern back knocking on with a try ;j n sight. Morland went off and M Donald I came on (20 minutes’ play ) . A scrum was formed near the Taieri line, and the ■ country side wag hard pressed. Simon ■ tried to go over, from a scrum, but was well taken, and another scrum was -ordered, Taieri having to force. A good kick by Bathgate shifted. play to haltway, and after Taieri passing had broken down M'Skimming missed with a penalty. Nisbet knocked on at the end of passing, and weak passing by Taieri let Southern away. Simon eent his backs on the right wing, Murdoch taking M Kerrow right at the corner flag. Only solid tackling bv Taieri was now keeping Southern out.. Southern were given a. free kick in bandy position, Shanks s kick hitting the upright and bouncing back. Hard work in front, of the Taieri goal saw Findlay kicking back well from a penalty. Trevathan marked in the face of a SM rush but play w'ent to the Southern twcnVv five. A free kick helped Southern, and Murdoch saved in the face of another attack—a cross-kick by MKeirqw. Play hung at midfield. Osborne missed with a penalty, with eight minutes to go, and play went to midfield. M risen put bin side in position with ft line then Murdoch stopped Nisbet well in a good movement. Bathgate kipked out from a penalty, and passing by Southern on M'Kerrow’s wing was also stopped. From a scrum at the Taieri twenty-five Southern attacked strongly, M Kerrow being collared .just in time On the throw-in Southern passed out, but 80l ton fumbled, and play went back to halfway.
