SOUTH ISLAND UNION FREIGHT CHARGES ON‘CARS DISCUSSED. * 1 ■ l (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. The wharfage on cars at Pieton and the freight charges for shipping them from Pieton to Wellington were discussed at a meeting of the executive of the South Island Motor Union, to-night. Mr Maekley, general manager of railways, wrote stating that the Railways Board could not reduce the wharfage charges for cars at Pieton. The Union Steam Ship Company wrote stating that it was investigating the possibility of reducing # the freight charges for cars between Pieton and Blenheim. The letter was received, members remarking that it sounded more hopeful than some previous letters. It was decided to refer the letters to the Canterbury Automobile Association with the request that it should seek the aid of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Motor Traders’ Association. - The Marlborough Automobile Association wrote endorsing the action taken by the Christchurch motorists, informing the New Zealand Automobile Association Incorporated that the ' association thought that it was in the interests of all clubs and associations that the Executive Committee should be given power to take such steps as was deemed desirable to combat any action by the Auckland Automobile Association that might be subversive of the interests of the North and South Island Motor Unions. All affiliated bodies in the South Island have now written endorsing the action of the Motor Union.
