JAPANESE GOODS

INCREASE IN DUTY ACTION BY INDIAN GOVERNMENT. CALCUTTA, June 7. Action to check the dumping of Japanese piece goods in India has been taken by the Government of India, which announces an increase in the duty from 50 per cent, to 75 per cent, on plain greys. There are no changes in the duty on other classes of piece goods, which is surprising, as the competition by Japanese coloured goods is almost as severe as it is in plain goods. CONSUL-GENERAL’S COMMENT INDIGNATION IN JAPAN. CALCUTTA, June 8. (Received June 8, at 9.55 p.m.) , The Japanese Consul-general in India says that it is unfortunate that India should increase the duty on Japanese cotton piecegoods while delicate negotiations are in progress. The Government’s action might have a serious effect on - diplomatic relations. Japanese public opinion is indignant at the British and Indian attempts to cripple Japanese overseas trade.
